Small cap equities in Asia Pacific (excluding Japan) fell by 4.5% in US dollar terms over August, as measured by MSCI AC Asia Pacific ex Japan Small Cap Index. The sharp escalation in US China trade tensions at the beginning of the month and fears of a global recession weighed on sentiment. Across the region, pro-cyclical stocks and sectors were particularly hard hit, with energy, materials, industrials and financials suffering sharp falls. In China, markets plunged after US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of additional tariffs on Chinese imports, and the renminbi fell to an 11-year low at one point. Economic news for July was also downbeat, with industrial output growth slowing to a 17-year low and retail sales rising by less than expected. Hong Kong stocks also performed badly, as continuing political protests damaged investor sentiment. In South Korea, the Kospi Index plummeted to a three-year low due to the worsening relationship with Japan. Australian bourses’ strong run was also halted in August. Across the region, pro-cyclical stocks and sectors were particularly hard hit, with energy, materials, industrials and financials suffering sharp falls.
